Details

This course introduces key concepts of green design practices. Upon completion of this course you will be able to: List the differences between ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ design, and explain why ‘good’ design is neither; Components of a successful green project; Disciplines involved in a successful green building project and how they relate to ASHRAE activities; Green building rating systems available and the pros and cons of each system; Fundamentals of heat transfer and their impact(s) on conduction, convection, radiation, and HVAC&R design; Define the concept of sustainability; Describe the: Incentives for designing green; Process of performing a life cycle assessment; 1st and 2nd Laws of Thermodynamics and explain their importance to green design; Bernoulli equation and how it relates to the fundamentals of fluid flow; Explain the justification for green design; Apply the fundamental concepts of HVAC&R design to: (a) power generation and production; (b) air conditioning; (c) pump and fan similarity laws; (d) transfer of heat and mass through moving water and air; (e) pump and fan power calculations. (I-P), 4.0 PDHs. This course is approved by AIA and GBCI. It can be subscribed to independently, as a part of the Sustainability Course Package, or Advanced Technologies eLibrary.
