The course is designed to educate developing country policy makers, business leaders, and community stakeholders about the benefits of air conditioning and refrigeration, the scientific principles involved, and factors that contribute to maximum energy efficiency. This course was developed by UNEP to jointly build the capacity of National Ozone Officers (NOOs) and national energy policymakers (NEPs) for linking energy efficiency with Montreal Protocol objectives in support of the Kigali Amendment. The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer helps protect the climate by phasing down high global warming potential (GWP) hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are commonly used as refrigerants. Promoting energy efficiency of air-conditioning and refrigeration technology can significantly increase those climate co-benefits. Energy Efficiency Literacy was developed with support from the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Programme (K-CEP) and in cooperation with ASHRAE.
By completing this course, you will better understand:
- Why we need air conditioning and refrigeration.
- Processes that maintain spaces at lower temperatures.
- How air-conditioning and refrigerating system components work together and use refrigerants.
- How to avoid or correct problems to promote responsible use of resources, reduce operating costs, and create healthier environments and better buildings.
